About X the Cord: the guide nobody hands you
Life doesn't come with instructions. Some people have a parent who walks them through leases, pay stubs and doctor's appointments. Lots of people don't, or the adults around them never learned it either. X the Cord is here for anyone figuring it out.
Plenty of people never had anyone walk them through this
The idea started with a friend who noticed how many young people head out on their own without anyone to explain the basics. The more we looked, the bigger it got. It isn't about where you grew up. Plenty of people just never got the walkthrough.
So we asked: what would a well-organized parent explain, if they knew a little about everything? Then we put it in one place, in plain words, one small step at a time.
What X the Cord does
Plain explanations
Everyday words, no jargon, no lecture. What a thing is, why it matters, and what to do about it.
Small, real steps
Short checklists and questions to ask. You don't need it all figured out. Start where you are.
Where to look
Free, trustworthy resources and the right kind of professional for bigger questions. Asking for help is a smart move.
Room for your people
Independence doesn't mean doing it alone. The guides work just as well with a parent, mentor or friend beside you.
What X the Cord
is and isn't
Not professional advice
The guides are general information to help you get started. For legal, money or health questions about your own situation, talk to a qualified professional.
Written for the United States
We use US documents, terms and resources. Many rules vary by state, and we say so when they do.
For anyone figuring life out
Every guide is free, with no account needed. Use what helps, skip what doesn't, and come back whenever you need to.
